Matthew Hance fills us in on his body of work in the Fall '23 exhibition, "Stellar Spirits".

1.What initially brought you to art?

I had unlimited space. The freedom my parents gave me to try anything I wanted, to be as

expressive as I wanted, and to not be judged.

2. What imagery has historically interested you and why?

I have to say imagery that possesses a strong narrative either objectively or subjectively, has historical undertones, and is figurative based. I find that’s it’s rich and more interesting than anything else.

3. How has your process evolved in the last 5-10 years?

I’ve learned to take more chances, to dive into paintings quicker by way of trusting myself more, and to care less.

4. What or who has had the most influence on your work?

Francis Bacon (painter)

5. What is your identity at large? Do you think about this a lot in relation to your art?

I am an artist. Not so much, but maybe sometimes if needed.

6. What is the most precious takeaway from this exhibition?

That people from all walks of life can come together have a collective experience. That is

powerful.

7. What has surprised you about your practice?

The integration of using Sebum as a medium. Sebum is an oily substance produced in the

sebaceous glands. It mixes with fat molecules, called lipids, to form a protective coating on the skin's surface. These lipids help hydrate the skin and protect it from potentially harmful

pathogens, such as bacteria and fungi. When in a pinch, you can use just about anything at your disposal to rate something.
